New age threats to privacy and intellectual property.
A recent event that many of us have found ourselves complying with is the GDPR (General Protection Data Regulation). Those more familiarized with the tech industry understand the motive behind it, however, average day to day users may be wondering what the sudden swarm of emails and privacy updates is all about. In a nutshell, what GDPR regulates a new set of rules by which companies must abide to share data online. What is new? It will become more difficult to obtain personal data, users will need to give explicit consent and will need a way to revoke consent, and new agreements for companies that obtain your information second hand. What happens if they do not comply? Well, penalties are more severe than the ones there are in place now. Although this is a European law, the internet basically has no continents so every company better be covered as precaution, also this law extends to companies based outside of the EU. As we have learned in this class, some key aspects of privacy are: freedom from intrusion, control of personal information and freedom from surveillance. I think this new law put into effect is great and beneficial to users. Many times, we are forced to agree to terms and condition to become a member of a site or application, but I we do not agree then we cannot join. These sites are funded by ads and so on, so our information is given to them and then we get bombarded with ads that we do not necessarily want to see constantly show up on our screens. “After disclosure, you lose control”. The fact that this new law is requiring there to be a way to revoke consent is amazing. This means that users have some control over their information and will not be overpowered by companies because an agreement has been signed.
